Upset at Nationals as Cadets progress to semi

Gavin and Mark

Mark O'Flynn and Gavin Maguire provided the shock of the National Championships when they beat Brian Fitzgerald and John Bowe in the Mens Doubles quarter finals. That is if you don't count Brian Fitzgerald's fantastic win over Jason Sugrue in the Mens Singles as a shock.

The two youngsters played aggressively and with no fear winning 3-0 before any nerves set in. Their returns were sharp and their forehans topspin qucik and aggressive as they surprised the more experienced duo. Unfotunately they lost the semi final to Kevin Devaney and Robert Gavin in a much more tense affair 3-1 thereby being denied the chance to play the eventual winners John Murphy and Conor Nolan in the final.

Brian Fitzgerald was superb in the mens singles first taking out Jason Sugrue who was unbeaten in Ireland since he first declared for Ireland a few years ago and then winning well against an in-form Peter Graham in the semi. The final was a fairly tame affair with Brian overcoming Damien Lynch 3-0

Earlier in the first round of the Mens singles Gavin had a good win 3-1 over Phillip Wallace the number 7 seed.
