League 2004 Three in a row for Premier Division Champions The Premier division team did not finish with a bang but a very comfortable 7-2 win over UCD gave us an unassailable lead in the league and capped another year of success for the club. the team of John bowe, Gilles Ducorroy,Marcus MCDonnell and NaNing were not stretched too much during the season and the debuts of some oif our younger players was the only occasions when points were dropped. It was good experience for them and hopefully they can play a greater part in future years. in the mreanwhile congratulations to the team. WEEK TEN The Division One team drew another match 5-5 after being in a 5-3 lead. With most of the older guys bound by exams it was avery youthful side that we fielded for this match. Mark and Gavin played with Conor Morgan from the division three team subbing. Gavin played well in his first match to win against Neville Graver in 5 sets and although Mark lost his first match to Rene he went on to win his other two. Key match was Conor's five set win against Neville which secured a draw as Gavin had also won two. Mark and Gavin never got into the doubles and the match was squared when they lost 3-1. WEEK NINE There were no league matches this week with rearranged fixtures and so on meaning that all this week's matches have been postponed to other weeks. Next week will be fairly hectic with four matches fixed for both home and away. WEEK EIGHT The Division One team continued their good from with a draw against St Pauls' Drogheda who are leading the league. Gavin Maguire was the star of the show with two comeback wins against Stephen Dunne and Jim Finglas. Mark unusually for him could only win one against Jim and Andy won two. Ros won her three but was two nil and doen 5-2 in the third to Mark in the first game and did well to survive.Still even without the ill Sean Givernaud this was a good point for the team who have now picked up 6 points out the last eight. Finally the Division Three team put their first win on the board. A solid team performance saw Andy win three and both Niall and Shane win two each to secure a 7-2 win. This was agood win for the boys who have so often been close but frustratingly come up short on several occasions. Key matches were Shane's three nil win over Dave Kennedy which us off to a good start and Niall coming back from 2-0 down to win against Dave. The match was marred by some players not knowing how to behave when you are a guest in someone's club. WEEK SEVEN The Premier division team won
their match with Pioneers Two this week in a strange affair with
both teams only able to field two players. Marcus McDonnell and
Na Ning lined out for us. It proved impossible to find a sub on
this night as Mark has played his two and can't sub anymore and
other players were not available due to other matches and personal
reasons .Marcus had an epic battle with Tommy Caffrey which was
the highlight of the night. After being two nil down he fought back
to level the match at two all. In a closely fought fifth set Marcus
had chances to finish off the match but unfortunately went down
14-12 in the last set. We won all the other matches to claim victory
by an agreed score of 5-3. Strange one that! In Tallaght at the division Three match neither Conor nor Niall could get going. They have both been out sick or injured recently and their consistency was not up to scratch. It was left to Shane Foster to put points on the board for us. After losing to the number 3 in the first game he went on to win his two remaining games. His best win was against Cyril Sweeney where he came from 2-0 down to stage a great fight back to level at two all. In the final set he played excellent attacking table tennis to win 11-2. He won his other game 3-0 against Dave Kennedy .Overall the team went down 7-2 but as we meet again next week we will be looking to avenge that defeat. The Division Three team rounded off the week with a great fightback in Balgriffin. Finding themselves 5-2 down with Shane struggling to find his form of Tuesday night, Niall and Andy Holohan in for the injured Conor Morgan, won two singles and a doubles to gain a credible 5-5 draw. With the Premier team in action on Tuesday the Division One team put out a strong team with Andy Boland, Sean Givernaud and Mark O'Flynn starting for the clash with Terenure One .We won 6-3 in an even and hard fought battle. Andy was on top from winning three. but that was not without a struggle. He was 2-0 down to Vinnie in his first match before he came back to win 3-2 and he just pipped Jim Storey by the same score in an excellent match .Mark O'Flynn continued his excellent form in this Division with two very good wins against Liam Perris and Vinnie O'Neill but he lost out 3-1 to Jim. He has won 4 out of 6 in the past two matches and could easily have won 6 out of 6.Sean beat Vinnie but could not maintain his consistency against the other two. This team have improved now with two wins and draw in their last three games .This all makes next weeks home match with league leaders St. Paul's very interesting. Matches Next
Week WEEK SIX The Premier Team got back to winning ways in this week's Premier division match. The team has yet to line up the same for any two matches but all the players have contributed to the good season in the Premier Division .We have been unbeaten this season and but for the draw against UCD have looked very solid. This week John Bowe and Marcus McDonnell lead the team with Andy Boland from the Division One team being the third man. They produced another comprehensive 7-2 win. Andy had a good win over Torsten and also won one against Shane while going down to Stephen. John bowe won Three and Marcus beat Stephen and shane but lost to Torsten. Our Division One team weakened by Andy being on duty with the Premier Team snatched a credible 5-5 draw. Even with that they were unlucky as Mark O'Flynn won two but only lost deuce in the fifth to Paudge Donohue while Sean Givernaud also won two but lost his first of the night to Danny O'Sullivan. Mark beat Jim Davey and Danny while Sean beat Jim and Paudge. Gavin Maguire could not win one which is unusual as he has won at least one in most matches. Sean and Mark Combined to snatch a draw with a 3-1 win in the doubles. The Division Three team had a difficult match this week against St Paul's. They lost 9-0 with a slightly weakened team of Wael Ahmed, Shane Foster and Andrew Holohan not really playing their best table tennis of the season. All the boys are doing Exams at the moment and you could see that their concentration was not there .Even at that Shane lost in five to Tom and Andy lost in five to Jonathon.. Matches Next
Week WEEK FIVE The Premier Team faced an uphill struggle from the off in this week's Premier division match. They found themselves 2-0 down to UCD after John Bowe lost 3-0 to David MacNeill in the opening match and Mark O'Flynn lost 3-1 to Colin Byrne. It was left to Marcus McDonnell to encourage a revival by his 3-1 victory over Ross Cullen. David MacNeill proved to be the star of the night taking his three singles with a cracking display of Table Tennis. John Bowe played well to take his remaining two singles and Marcus also beat Colin Byrne in four sets. Mark played well on the night getting some opportunities to play positive forehand topspin .His closest game was with Ross where he led 8-6 in the fourth before losing a long deuce to go down 3-1. 5-4 down after the singles Marcus and John played a confidant doubles to snatch a draw. Our Division One team recorded our first points of the season as Sean Givernaud and Andrew Boland both lined out for the team. Both are doing exams this year but they both won three as the team beat Terenure 6-3 in a closely fought match. The Division Three team had a good match this week and were desperately unlucky not to win out in a close encounter with Leinster CC as the game slipped away 6-4. Niall McDonnell won three but another debutante Wael Ahmed failed to win one in spite of Five sets with Simon Holohan. Next week its Super Tuesday as all three teams do battle on the same day. The premier team is in Mount Pleasant while the other teams are at home. Matches Next
Week WEEK FOUR The Premier Team had a rest week this week but there were still three matches as the Division one team had two matches because of a cancellation. Incredibly all three games resulted in 8-1 defeats. Matches Next
Week WEEK THREE The Premier Team continued their winning ways with an excellent 7-2 win over one of their main rivals for the title Pioneers One. Damien Lynch was in good form and took two singles against Gilles Ducorroy and Marcus McDonnell but Na Ning won against him in five closely fought sets. There were a good few other five setters but the closely fought encounters fell on the Eastpoint side with Gilles Marcus and Ning all having good wins against Kevin Mackey and Dave Pemberton. It was not the best of week's for the Division One team who went down 8-1 to St. Paul's Drogheda. Andy Boland opened our account with a good win against Stephen Dunne and it was looking good when Shane Foster was 2-0 up against Jim Finglas but Jim fought back to level the match at 2-2. Shane then seemed in control of the fifth but it was experience over youth when Jim crawled back from 6-10 down to take the match. Shane,Conor and Andy all lost to an In form Ros Comerford and the momentum of the match having swung the way of the home side they ran out 8-1 winners. Next week the Premier team have a rest week before taking on UCD on Monday week. The Division One team have a match on Tuesday and Thursday to make up a fixture they missed and the Division Three team visit Terenure Matches Next
Week WEEK TWO The premier team of Na Ning and Gilles Ducorroy able assisted by another of our rising young stars,Shane Foster won their second match 6-3 against Pioneers Two. Ning and Giles won three singles each. The first match where Gilles was 2-0 down and 9-9 in the third with Tommy Caffrey proved a decisive match as Gilles came back to win 11-6 in the fifth. Shane played well against Dara Melinn and Pat O'Brien where he lost 3-1 but Tommy Caffrey was too experience for the Blackrock teenager who went down 3-0. Gilles wrapped the match up with a close 3-0 win over Pat O'Brien in the final singles. In other league action this week our division one team lost 6-3 to Terenure 1. Andy Boland made his return to competitive table tennis but was injured and could not play to his best but I am sure he will improve. Mark O'Flynn gave another sparkling league performance winning against Vinnie O'Neill and losing 3-2 to Jim Storey. Gavin Maguire also played well winning one and losing very close to Liam Perris 3-2. The Division three team were very unlucky to lose a 5-2 lead and end up with only a draw in a bad tempered match with Balgriffin 4. Andy Holohan was the star of the team winning three and looking fairly comfortable while Shane and Conor could only manage one each. all in all it is a good experience for the players.. The premier team will look to defend their record in their first away match against a strong Pioneers One side. Matches Next
