League Report 2003 Eastpoint's Premier team got off to a promising start to the defense of their title with a 6-4 victory over ALSAA, the shield winners. Brian Fitzgerald won two singles, Marcus McDonnell won two and Sean Givernaud deputising for John Bowe won one. A great win in the doubles by Brian and Marcus over Na Ning and Conor Nolan sealed the win. It is a very tough and competitive league this season and the next match with UCD will also be a cracker, but it is all to play for at the moment. The younger players started their campaign with a resounding 9-0 defeat at home but they had not practiced over christmas and it was their first taste of league,so they can only improve. In their second match improve they did against Sportsco again losing but 7-2 this time. Niall had 3 5-setters winning one and Mark won one and lost 11-9 in the fifth to Jimmy Fleming Second League Report 2003 Eastpoint Premier
Division team had a resounding 8-1 victory over ALSAA in their secondencounter
in the league. The ALSAA team of Conor Nolan, John murphy and Na
Ning were stunned by a superb display of table tennis from
our team. Play-off Stalemate Eastpoint and ALSAA played out a 5-5 draw in the League play off. Na Ning won his 3 matches and John murphy had a good win over John Bowe to leave the Eastpoint team struggling at 5-2 down but they staged a great fight back to secure a draw. The League hangs in the balance as a 7-2 loss to Pioneers undid the good work of two wins over ALSAA. Unfortunately John Bowe was not available that night and although Sean Givernaud beat Dave Pemberton in the match it was not enough top save the team from defeat. The match with ALSAA is to be played at a neutral ground Eastpoint have retained their Premier Division title by the narrowest of margins. Having drawn the play-off 5 - 5 we were awarded the title by a countback of sets 13 - 12. Still having beaten ALSAA twice during the season and only lost when we were forced to field a weaken team it seems fitting the holders should retain the title. Well Done to Marcus, Brian and John and thanks again to our Sponsors CMG Interactive. |
